Trials will be held early in Term 1 next year for Season 1 where the competition includes boys and girls Oztag, boys and girls Volleyball and boys Basketball. More information about these will be provided to students at the start of the school year next year.
Bianca Infante and Romeo Atengco- The Australian Youth Volleyball Championships, Victoria
You would recall reading about Bianca Infante of year 11 and Romeo Atengco of year 10 being selected into their respective state teams for Volleyball. Please see the excerpts below from Romeo and Bianca, based on their recent experience:
Romeo:
‘The Australian Youth Volleyball Nationals were held at Bendigo, Victoria. Over the 5 day competition, we played against each state once. On the first day, we won our game with elite players From South Australia 2:1. We followed this with another win later in the day against Tasmania. We became undefeated throughout the other matches with us losing one game before our semi final against the reigning Champions, the Queensland Maroon team. We had gotten to the semi-finals which we lost against South Australia on a tiebreaker with the game lasting a total of 2 hours. We sadly lost the final point and were disappointed as we knew we could've won. We ended up placing 4th overall in the competition. It was a great experience and I still continue to train harder for next year.’
Romeo also recently competed at a 3 day tournament in Canberra at the AIS facilities against over 105 teams in a competition that has run for the last 56 years.
Bianca:
‘From the 25th - 29th September, my team had played a total of 7 round robin games and successfully secured a spot in the playoffs, which would determine who would compete in the semi-finals. We played a very intense and close match, losing 23-25 in the last set to the Queensland Maroon team, who would end up winning the entire competition. We finished the tournament placing 5th overall in the entire nation. All in all, it was an amazing experience, and I am excited for what the 2023 indoor season has in store.’
A very big congratulations from the whole St Andrews community to both Bianca and Romeo.
Watch this space; there are big things to come from these two talented young people!
