Visual Arts Term 1

Year 7 has been learning “How do I work like an artist?”, studying how to add meaning to their artworks through symbolism. After analysing how Margaret Dodd communicated meaning in her artwork Wedding Cake, the students designed a cupcake that included symbols of their own identity. These designs have been transformed into handbuilt ceramic sculptures and are close to completion. The students will be painting them next term. We look forward to the finished artworks.

This term Year 8 Visual Arts classes have been learning “How does my choice of media and techniques express my ideas?” through studying Cubism. After analysing the different techniques used by the artists Pablo Picasso and Juan Gris to create their artworks, the students experimented drawing an object with cubist techniques using lots of tone and textures. They then designed a composition using a musical instrument in the cubist style. Students used chalk pastels to colour their imagery in a limited colour palette.
