ST ANDREWS COLLEGE LEADERSHIP TEAM 2021
Newsletter 5 2021
Dear Members of the St Andrews College Community,
Thank you for a successful Term 1. I have really enjoyed moving around the College and witnessing the learning that is taking place.
I hope you all enjoy the wonders of Holy Week and Easter and have a well deserved break. Thank you for the way in which you have demonstrated your love for our great College. That could have been through getting involved, exercising diligence in the classroom, seeking feedback from teachers on your performance, advocating for the College at Open Day and in Primary Feeder School visits, or modelling exemplary behaviour towards others. Attitude, choice, and action all contribute to our success as a College. I look forward to seeing you all upon your safe return in Term 2.
‘It’s All About Learning’
Lenten Reflection:
In the Season of Lent, we are encouraged to reflect and examine our relationship with God, others, and ourselves. To help me do this, I often choose to read a book or select a theme to focus on during this holy season.
One of my favourite paintings is Rembrandt’s The Prodigal Son and the book, The Return of the Prodigal Son by Henri Nouwen, is the one I am reading yet again, this Lent. I find the theme of reconciliation is always significant for me as I look through the lenses of my spiritual journey, and personal wellbeing, particularly as I have now most definitely entered the second phase of my life. The first being the busy, growing, learning and establishing time of education and career, growing friendships, finding a partner, building a home and family. The second stage being more about sitting with the questions and reflection of what all that means for me now, as I look at my life and the world around me through the lens of reconciliation as in forgiveness. I question the ‘why moments’ of my life - Is it working? What is my belief and understanding? Where is God in the crisis, grief or turmoil? What is my purpose?
The reflection and Lenten pilgrimage for me is travelling through the stages and personalities in the painting and the parable. Who am I? What is my relationship with the others in the story as I take on each person’s role: parent, child, sibling, community member? How do I reconcile my actions and how do I reconcile the actions of others whose behaviours and actions impact my life? These are the questions that we all sit with, act on and grow from. These questions can be pondered in our chosen faith tradition without ownership or connection to any faith tradition.
The story that Jesus tells has an inner message, an invitation to spiritual and moral growth that is as prevalent today as it was over 2000 years ago. The sibling rivalry, the greed, the jealousy, the arrogance, the fear, the judgement, the disrespect to our elders, the entitlement is all present, but it is the trust, homecoming, affirmation and reconciliation at the end of the story that I hope and strive to emulate. This is the message of God, the painting, the parable and my Lenten journey.
Acknowledging that God’s reconciling arms are open and that my growth moment is in accepting this unconditional love, that I am worthy of this love despite my behaviour at times, that my life journey and actions have value, that I am valued and loved is a magnificent moment of awakening and truly reconciles me to my story, my truth and my relationship and spiritual journey with Jesus.
Reflection and reconciliation are not just for Lent, they are for every day. We are all invited to return to God, or to enquire for the first time, however we choose to connect. The invitation is beautifully explored by Archbishop Desmond Tutu in 'God has a Dream'. It is for us to return to and trust in God’s dream every day. Lent might be a good time to begin this journey:
"I have a dream God says, please help me to realise it. It is a dream of a world whose ugliness and squalor and poverty, its war and hostility, its greed and harsh competitiveness, its alienation and disharmony are changed into their glorious counterparts, when there will be more laughter, joy, peace and compassion, caring and sharing. I have a dream that …my children will know that they are all members of one family, the human family, God’s family, My family.” [Desmond Tutu, 'God has a Dream: A Vision of Hope for Our Time'; (New York: Doubleday, 2004; 19, 20)]
Spiritual growth for us, whether we are in the first or second half of our life, whether we are the privileged, the indulged or the marginalised is to know everyone is loved by God and we are to love one another as God loves us in thought, word, and deed.

Thank you to Mr Clarke, Ms Kalifa, Mr Alata, Mr Chiapetta, and students for the way in which you led the College Easter Liturgies. They were respectful and reflective in nature, as well as providing focus for the remaining Easter services. I enjoyed being part of the ‘Washing of the Feet’ on the Senior Campus as part of the ceremony there.
DOING MORE GOING BEYOND-Issabella Narayan:
Issabella Narayan has officially finished her laps for life fundraising. She set a goal of 80km and swam a total of 106.43km throughout the month of March and raised a massive total of $3000 which will go directly to the Reach Out Foundation. We are so very proud of you Issabella.
Year 12 Reports and Conferences:
Thank you to staff, students and parents for the manner in which you engaged with the new Reports as well as the associated Conferences on Monday evening.
Jazz Night:
Congratulations to Mr Chiapetta, Mr Alata, Mrs Cooper and Ms Breeze for all the work that went into the Jazz Night on Tuesday. It was a very enjoyable evening. The pride in self and performance expressed on the students faces, the spirit of cooperation between students and staff, and the support given to each other was especially pleasing. I look forward to further events like this.
Year 11 2022 Information Evening:
Thank you to Mrs Deschamps, Mr Haras, Leaders of Learning and staff for the way the evening was delivered. The students and their parents have a detailed process of discernment and reflection that they will be entering into now regarding their Stage 6 subject selections.
CSDA Debating and Volunteers:
After yet another very successful Public Speaking season we move into Debating starting Term 2. We are hoping to have Debating matches live at school to also engage the many student volunteers we have at the College. There is no other school I have experienced that have such a willingness to support their school and their peers. It makes me very proud and thankful. Thank you to all students who tried out for teams. We are the most represented school in the Diocese in Debating and it shows in our performances. I look forward to seeing all teams compete throughout the season ahead.
Sporting Successes:
- Congratulations to our Diving Team who are training very hard on Thursday afternoons as well as Sunday’s at the Olympic Diving Pool Homebush. Mrs Weaver is so dedicated to developing the talents of the many students who are part of the team. I am so grateful. They competed at the Combined Catholic Colleges Competition on Monday 29th March. Congratulations Matilda Adamecki, Ava Alley, Annabella Ayton, Euleila Barret, Holly Brasier, Ava Bylsma, Jett Crook, Alyssa Hallat, Bianca Infante, Lara Kearns, Jade Kember, Charlise Kenny, Marley Koza, Holly McLoughlin, Isabelle Metcalfe, Ava Mulroney, Laura O'Neill, Diana Park, Brooke Robinson, Jessica Waligora. Congratulations to the following students who received a Bronze Medal in their respective events Ava Alley, Marley Kozak, Lara Kearns and Jett Crook. Marley Koza, Jett Crook and Lara Kearns will be competing at the All Schools Diving Event at the end of May. Mrs Weaver was very proud of the development of each and every competitor with their scores being significantly elevated from previous years. Well done.
- Congratulations to Georgia Green (Year 12) and Isabella Narayan (Year 9) for their efforts in making the Combined Catholic Colleges Swim Team.
- College Cross Country: Well done to all students who participated in the College Cross Country Trials over the past week. We wish our representatives all the very best in Term 2 at the PDSSSC Cross Country.
- Wishing the boys in the CCC Touch Football Carnival in Port Stevens the very best.
Year 5 Primary School Visits:
I have finished my Primary School visits in attending St John Vianney’s Doonside and Good Shepherd Plumpton. I really enjoy the opportunity to take ex students back to their primary schools for two reasons. The first is the show how much they have developed as young men and women, and the second is to demonstrate all that is on offer at our great school from a student perspective. I know the Primary Schools are very proud of their ex students.

Notice from Holy Family Services Quakers Road
Dear Parents,
Holy Family Service’s property and the site in general is not part of the school and as such, external people cannot use the driveway or car park for drop offs, pick ups or learner driving practice. We have had a number of near misses both with our children from the child care centre and our elderly residents with learner drivers from the school stopping in here to swap over, parents dropping off in the driveway blocking the road for our staff and parents from the child care, and then speeding through the car park and out the other driveway. This is all happening despite having put signage at the front entrance that it is private property and there are to be no school drop offs. We are now returning to peak visiting with the car park being in high use at certain times so it is even more important that only visitors use the car park from a safety perspective. Thank you
Subject Selection Interview - Initial Process
Term 2 Week 1 the Subject Selection Site for Year 11 2022 will be shared with students and parents. The site is introduced earlier than in previous years so students and parents can begin discussions.
It is imperative that students are attracted to subjects which they have skill in, interest in or maybe a prerequisite for a career area of interest.
It is important that students make the choices as they will need to be committed for two years to the HSC pattern of study they choose. In this time students will be challenged and need to demonstrate sustained effort and due diligence. If a student chooses subjects which are inappropriate for their ability or they do not have an interest in, they are setting themselves up for stress and potentially achieving less than desirable results.
In T2 Week 1 - Week 5 T4, students will receive an invitation to the initial subject selection interview in the Learning Centre at an indicated time in order to begin discussions about possible subjects they are interested in, in conjunction with their Year 9 and 10 school results across subjects. Rigorous subjects have parameters which students need to consider. If a student has not met the parameters to date, they will need to demonstrate subject entry requirements for the subject. Parameters ensure that students are set up for success in Stage 6.
Following the interview with the student, the parent and student will receive an email detailing the conversation and suggestion based on the student’s achievement at school so far.
More information about the subject selection evening will follow shortly as well as the parent/student subject interview following subject selections.
NAPLAN Practice Tests
Students in Years 7 and 9 completed NAPLAN practice tests in Week 9. The tests enabled the students to use the online tools so they gain confidence when they do the actual tests in May.
In preparation for the upcoming NAPLAN tests, students should aim to do their best in every subject in order to keep developing and practicing their literacy and numeracy skills.
God Bless everyone over Easter
Term 1 has been a jam-packed and incredible start to the year for our Year 11 students. As the students commenced the first term of their senior studies it has been wonderful to hear lots of positive feedback from the staff about the commitment and dedication of Year 11 students and their willingness to challenge themselves and set goals in each of their subjects. Although at times students found it difficult to balance classwork, assessments and home learning tasks; they have risen to the challenge and have come to understand the importance of putting in the work in order to achieve success. A reminder to all students that it is crucial for them to read through the feedback they receive from their teachers and apply these comments and strategies to their future work. I’ve enjoyed seeing and hearing about lots of the different activities students have been getting up to in class . From beep tests in PDHPE, simulated archaeological digs in Ancient History and coastal site excursions in Geography - keep up the great work!
There have been many events this term which have highlighted the outstanding talents and participation of our year 11 students. There have been great fundraising activities that have been led by the students including Valentines Day for Vinnies and the Project Compassion fundraisers that many Learning Groups organised. I would also like to commend the students who elected to participate as competitors in the Swimming Carnival: Jasmine Zolerick, Marcus Domingo, Viktoria Vidovic and Ethan France - in particular, congratulations to Marcus and Viktoria who made it through to the PDSSSC carnival. We have also had many other Year 11 students compete in various sporting events such as the PDSSSC Touch Gala Day and the MCS Basketball tournament and PDSSSC Basketball Gala Day - well done to the boys basketball team for being silver medalists in both tournaments. Congratulations to all these students who tried out for teams and participated in these tournaments. We have also had Year 11 students representing the College in the CSDA Public Speaking Competition - congratulations to Chegutdit Deng, Wasim Rahman and Aditi Pal for their fantastic speeches. This week’s Jazz night was a wonderful way to end the term and showcased so many amazing performances from our Year 11 musicians and singers. I was blown away by the talent that was on the display and the dedication and commitment to your art!
A major highlight of this term for Year 11 was the Retreat. Each house was sent to a different location where they participated in various activities and discussions about their journey so far in life, their connection and relationship with God and to build upon their spiritual journey. I was able to attend the Retreat with the Gould house and had a fantastic time watching the students participate in all the activities and be open and honest with each other in their discussions. From the feedback given by the staff and students at the other venues it was clear that the students had a very enjoyable time and were a joy to take out on this experience. Thank you to Mr Clarke, Ms Kalifa, Ms Desira and Mr Loyola for your leadership and organisation of the various Retreats.
In our wellbeing lessons this term we have touched on some really important areas to help students begin to manage their goals and pathways to success. Our first wellbeing lesson was based around ‘soaring with our strengths’ where students used the VIA Character Strength survey to identify their top strength and understand how to use this to their advantage. We then created a wonderful display of Year 11 soaring with their strength. This term we have also covered some important information from Ms May about the ATAR and NESA, as well as practicing some mindfulness strategies. Finishing our wellbeing lessons this term, the SRC led a trivia session for Teamwork Week which had the Learning Groups working together as a team to compete for the glory of Trivia Champs - congratulations to C21 who earned their title and prize!
It has been a wonderful term and I am so proud of all of the effort Year 11 has put into their coursework and extracurricular activities. I hope that you all have a Blessed Easter and a relaxing and rewarding break with your families. It is a chance to catch up on any work and prepare study notes of your Term 1 units so that you can start fresh and ready for the commencement of Term 2.

Take care of yourselves and each other.
Miss Emily Pett
Leader of Learning Wellbeing - Year 11
Dear Parents and Students of Year 9,
Our Wellbeing Lesson on Friday 24th March focused on Building Resilience. Learning Group activities stressed the importance
of developing students’ understanding of resilience, through identifying their skills and coping strategies. Students were given the opportunity to discuss and explore how these skills can assist them to overcome any future challenges that they may face.
Resilience is emotional strength. It’s the ability to cope when exposed to challenges or stressors. Resilience allows people to bounce back by adapting to stress and changing in healthy ways. It can be difficult to overcome challenges at times in our lives and often young people feel distressed, anxious or isolated. Resilience allows young people to regain control over their situation, without having a negative emotional response.
As members of St Andrews College, our mottos “Faith in Christ“ and “Doing More and Going Beyond“ sum up our daily purpose of being part of this Community. The Year 9 students were given the opportunity to discuss their life experiences with the other members of their Learning Group and to show their support to those who have faced difficult times in their lives.
Over the first Term, the Year 9 Learning Advisors have been getting to know their students. I would like to thank all of the Year 9 Learning Advisors for their hard work and support of their students throughout Term 1. It is with their encouragement and daily assistance that the year group achieves and thrives.
Year 9 has had a wonderful start to the year. I would like to congratulate all of the Year 9 students who became involved in the extracurricular activities throughout Term 1. Students are recognised for their achievements at our School Assemblies and at our Wellbeing Year Group Meetings. I would like to encourage all students to get involved in the upcoming extra curricular activities that St Andrews has to offer. Let’s make Term 2 the best one yet!
Below are a few photos taken of student involvement in our Wellbeing Year Group Meetings. I wish the Year 9 students a safe, restful and happy holiday. I am very much looking forward to a wonderful and successful Term 2 with the year group.
Mrs Andrea Utoikamanu
Leader of Learning Wellbeing - Year 9
Dear Year 8 Parents,
As we come to the end of another busy Term there is much to be grateful for in our Community. At St Andrews we strive to live with passion and purpose to see ourselves and others shine. The purpose of this article is to celebrate the many and varied student achievements completed in the Year 8 Wellbeing lessons throughout the Term.
In this Article, I have invited each of the Learning Advisors to write a reflection on how each Learning Group has progressed as a team over the last ten weeks. In our Well Being lessons we have focussed on the following Character Strengths;
Honesty: inspiring students to be their best possible self by speaking the truth but more broadly presenting themselves in a genuine way; being without pretense and taking responsibility for one’s actions and feelings.
Gratitude Week was a whole school event and the Student Representative Council members designed wonderful activities for students to be aware of and be thankful for all the good things that have happened in their lives. I encourage all students to keep completing their Gratitude Journal, which may not be possible every day but certainly each week.
Love of Learning - I do hope that your child has shown you their Learning Planner with their timetable and have developed effective home learning strategies to cope with the various tasks that are taught at school. If not, please send me an email and I will sit down at the beginning of Term 2 to design one for your child; following the pages 150 - 151 of the Learning Planner.
Social Intelligence means being aware of the motives and feelings of others and oneself. It is so important to know what to do to fit into different social situations and knowing what makes other people tick. St Andrews encourages a wide variety of extra curricular activities for this very purpose. Also students are studying a variety of subjects in Stage 4 to give them a broad understanding of the world around them.
Perspective for students is being able to provide wise counsel to others; having ways of looking at the world that makes sense to oneself and others. This indeed happens in the subjects students are studying in class but I encourage all Year 8 to spend time with people in their Learning Group; that they do not know. It is important to be a part of a team as all students are in the same Learning Groups until the end of Year 12 in 2025.
( Let me tell you all - the time will just fly by! )
Teamwork is so important because we use our social connections to learn well with other students and teachers in teams. The success of teamwork includes students multiplying their creativity as the College provides many opportunities to share and appreciate new ideas, outlooks and celebrates students’ strengths. That is why our Newsletter is so great to read!
Fairness in Week 8 of this Term centred around treating all people the same according to notions of justice and equality. Giving everyone a fair chance is one of the basic principles at St Andrews College.
Creativity gives students a sense of meaning and purpose in their lives. Students were given opportunities to think of novel and productive ways to conceptualise and do things which includes artistic achievement but was not limited to it. Below are examples of how the Learning Groups used their creativity to build teamwork, social intelligence, perspective and fairness in their Week 9 Wellbeing lesson.
In the Junior Learning Centres there is a Wellbeing Board that has excellent information on the Character Strength of the Week. I encourage all students to take the time to read it and think deeply about the information presented.
I wish all Year 8 Students a wonderful Easter with family and friends. The Staff at St Andrews look forward to another positive productive Term 2 - 2021!
8B11
B11 took part in a team building activity for Creativity Week to see who could make the tallest tower out of skewers and playdough. All teams really applied themselves to the challenge and some interesting approaches were taken to achieve their goal. Overall, the winning team on the day was the pink playdough group which included Aarna, Sakina, Sharlene and Liana. Well done to all teams for their effort and the spirit in which they undertook the task. You can view their amazing efforts below. Miss Hicks.

8G10
8G10 created anti-bullying posters for Creativity Week last Friday, either digitally or by hand. Students worked in groups or individually. Some students are continuing to work on these posters each morning in the Learning Group to complete them. We will be displaying them in the art room, G10. There are some budding artists in this class.

8F3
After the whole-school assembly, 8F3 heard about why creativity can be important for mental health, well being, learning new skills and self-expression in meaningful and creative ways.
Students voted on whether or not to play creative drawing/interpretive games or to play an outdoor game and enjoy the sunshine after the lengthy period of rainy weather - outdoor games won by a landslide vote. Then students went outside in the beautiful weather and played some creative outdoor games like ‘Pac-Man’, where two students lead the class and described the rules. After two rounds to clarify rules, we played one serious competitive round and a winner claimed victory (and bragging rights).
8F5
8F5 were given the task of choosing two out of the three following activities:
- Create an anti-bullying poster by hand or digitally.
- Work as a team to write a short story using a randomly selected character, setting and action.
- Write a song, rap or poem to encourage people to stand up against bullying.
The students applied themselves and let their creative juices flow throughout the completion of their chosen activities. Some students worked as a team and used each other's talents and ideas to create something unique, whilst others were inspired by existing works of art, poetry and music. The lesson showed that F5 had such a wide variety of creative talents including creative writing, drawing, digital media creation, song/poetry writing etc. The students were able to learn how to take these talents and apply them to their classwork or even use them to raise awareness for important causes such as the National Day Against Bullying and so many more.
An example of the awesome poem/rap/songs that were made:
“When you wanna be mean, it may be jealousy. You need to think with clarity. Have some class with your words, respect is earned. We make mistakes, but you gotta learn.”
Below are some of the great Anti-Bullying posters that were produced by the F5 team:

8C8 - Miss Bade
For Week 9, the theme was activity. After some brainstorming on what creativity was and how we could explore our own sense of creativity, the students participated in a few activities that allowed them to go beyond their comfort zones and explore their creativity.
In teams, students got creative in games of charades and pictionary. They were given very unusual prompts which required a lot of thinking on how to put these things together and be creative.
8C9 Mr Hoare.
8C9 were very inspired to create some anti-bullying posters which promotes a positive outlook for the future, and highlights the importance of St Andrew’s as an intentional faith community.

Leader of Learning Wellbeing - Year 8
It seems crazy to think that just a few weeks ago, year 7 were anxiously starting high school. While it has only been ten short weeks, the group have settled in beautifully and it is hard to imagine St Andrew’s without them. It has been an eventful term with more ups than downs and I’m excited to see what the rest of the school year will bring
The hurting game incursion
During the term we were lucky enough to have Brainstorm Productions come out to present the play “The hurting game”. Here students followed the story of two high school students struggling to fit in, and making some mistakes along the way. This production fostered some great discussions in our wellbeing lessons about safe online behaviour, friendships and having confidence in who you are.
The camp that wasn’t but will be!
The camp scheduled for this term was unfortunately a wash out. The unprecedented rain that we experienced in week 9 meant that conditions were too dangerous to send students to camp. However, thankfully the venue had one more available date for us to reschedule the camp to. We will now be going Term 2 Week 9 just after the long weekend on June 15th and 16th. The weather will be cooler, but hopefully dryer. I’m looking forward to our camp next term, as I am sure all of year 7 are.
Learning Group leaders
This term we elected the Learning Group Leaders for each Year 7 Learning Group. Congratulations to the following students
B3- Joshua Tolentino and Hayden Bilbie
B7- Samanta Cardona and Amelia Manks
C1- Aaron Geevarghese and Sean Healy
C3- Sharron Harry and Saihaj Reehal
F1- Alistairre Reyes and Gem Wong
F2- Rowena Kubik and Lara Temel
G5- Angelo Demian and Gian Portelli
G16- Kaydence Wells and Danijela
These students will assist their learning advisors for Semester One.
Sport
This term has been very successful for sport. As well as the basketball and volleyball teams, sport at school has also been rewarding for year 7. Ranging from hip hop to self defence, year 7 have grown in confidence learning new skills and getting involved.
Other achievements
It is so wonderful to see year 7 getting involved in all the opportunities available at St Andrew’s. -Samantha Xavier and Lexi Iskander represented the College in the CSDA public speaking competition wonderfully.
-Jett Crook came third in the CCC Diving competition
- Ranveer Rattan and Archisha Thumma gave an incredible speech to potential St Andrew’s families at Open Day
- Several year 7 students have entered the Young Archies portrait competition and we look forward to hearing more about this soon.
- Countless students are trying out for representative teams and rehearsing for CAN auditions
- Students have raised funds for project compassion in their Learning Groups.
- I’m sure there are many achievements that I don’t even know about yet! So please let me know what amazing things have been happening.
Helpful reminders
To help next term be just as successful as this one, students and families are reminded of the following
- On the occasion that students need to be out of uniform, please provide a note indicating why this is the case.
- Students are asked not to bring flip combs to school. These are the ones that look like a pocket knife that seem to be the trend at the moment. We don’t want people in the wider community getting worried or confused about what they are seeing. They are not appropriate for school.

The St Andrews Learning Framework
The St Andrews College Learning Framework has formed clear connections between the nature of assessment and improved student learning. St Andrews College utilises differences in the nature of assessment in order to achieve improved student learning. We are moving towards a continual assessment and feedback structure, where ongoing opportunities to engage the student, parent, and teacher in learning-focused dialogue become increasingly available. Part of this involves the increased use of formative assessment. Formative assessment emphasises effective feedback and it is through high quality feedback that students can improve their learning.
Our Steps In Learning model recognises the continuous nature of the learning experience and shifts the focus of instruction towards the process of ongoing growth and improvement.
Grades are used to help guide further learning improvements and are determined through rigorous processes of consistently aligning teacher judgements. It is intended that the student’s final grade will be a reflection of their overall performance in the subject, as determined by the professional judgements of the teachers. It is through regular professional collaboration that student performances are appraised against the Common Grade Scales designed for each subject.
The Steps In Learning are indicators of the student’s current progress in relation to their Stage of curriculum.
The “Meeting” Step In Learning indicates the student is demonstrating a “ Comprehensive At Stage ” level of understanding.
The “Approaching” Step In Learning indicates the student is demonstrating a “Sound At Stage” level of understanding.
The “Emerging” Step In Learning indicates the student is demonstrating a “Basic” or “Working Towards Stage” level of understanding.
The “Exceeding” Step In Learning indicates the student is demonstrating an “Extensive of Above Stage” level of understanding.
The St Andrews College Learning Framework models continual improvement through effective feedback. Effective feedback is generated through our focus on formative assessment, which emphasises assessment as and for learning. It is through the formative process that teachers are able to provide the most effective feedback/feedforward needed to support improved learning.
Thank you for continuing to support our mission here at the College and we look forward to working closely with all of our College families and friends to deliver educational outcomes of the highest possible standard for all.
Your sincerely,
Paul Haras

Sports articles week 10
SICC Rugby league selections
On the 24th of March 7 St Andrews Students were selected as part of a squad consisting of 21 other students across the diocese to attempt selection for the SICC U18s rugby league team.
This is a great achievement by our students as a third of the squad was made up of students from our school. It is a testament to their attitude, skill and passion for rugby league that allowed them to take part in this opportunity. Students found it challenging but rewarding on the day as it taught them valuable team working skills. The boys enjoyed the fact that they got to work with other players with unique skill sets on the day.
Following students involved Zaine Nassar, Paul Taveuveu, John Paul Donevski, Ben Afu, Kiah Mau'u, Sione Tafea and Danny Yazbek.
NSWCCC Touch Tournament
On the 30th and 31st of March two students from St Andrews College represented the Parramatta Diocese and the College at the CCC Touch football competition in Nelson Bay.
Zaine Nassary of year 12 and Jai Pereira of year 10 were selected to be part of the diocesan open boys touch team.
It is a fantastic achievement, and a testament to the boy's skill and passion. We are extremely proud of what they have achieved in being selected to play at this level.
NSWCCC Swim Carnival
On the 29th of March two St Andrews Students were involved in the NSWCCC Swimming carnival. Georgia Green and Isabella Narayan competed in the Carnival.
The college is extremely proud of what the girls have achieved with their swimming this year. It is a testament to their context training, attitude to improving and pushing themselves to achieve their personal bests.
College Competitors Cross Country event
The College was able to run the Cross Country competitors event. 32 students registered to compete and take part in the event. It was a great opportunity for all students to showcase their abilities and talents in long distance running in the opportunity of qualifying for the PDSSSC event that will run next term.

Visual Arts Term 1
Year 7 has been learning “How do I work like an artist?”, studying how to add meaning to their artworks through symbolism. After analysing how Margaret Dodd communicated meaning in her artwork Wedding Cake, the students designed a cupcake that included symbols of their own identity. These designs have been transformed into handbuilt ceramic sculptures and are close to completion. The students will be painting them next term. We look forward to the finished artworks.

Stations of the Cross
The Stations of the Cross are representations of the path Jesus bore on his way to the crucifixion. They involve Jesus enduring suffering, insults, moments of support, and relay the intense and ultimate sacrifice that we believe Jesus undertook for our salvation. The Stations of the Cross provide a type of meditation or reflection about our personal experiences in relation to the suffering that Christ experienced.
Today at the St Andrews Senior Campus students and staff participated in the Stations of the Cross with students dramatising through silhouette each station. Students chanted the Taize "Jesus Remember Me" in between each Station and conclude with "Were you there when they Crucified My Lord?" sung beautifully by our senior music students.
On the Junior Campus, Year 10 student leaders from the Faith & Justice group narrated and enacted 8 stops for the four Stations. Each class visited these as a pilgrimage around the College grounds.
We thank all students and staff who were involved in the Stations of the Cross. We wish all St Andrews families a blessed Easter - whilst we commemorate the tomb we are the Easter People and live on easter Sunday .
In Christ,

On the 26th of March, the Visual Arts seniors of the school travelled to the Art Gallery of New South Wales with Miss Mamuk and Mrs Psaila.
We visited the ARTEXPRESS 2020 collection, the general Art Gallery and the Contemporary Collection. Our intention was to investigate artists’ techniques in their selected expressive form and how well they executed their technical skill. We also explored the connections made between artists’ chosen concept, how well it was depicted amongst the in-depth layers of meaning and how well this engaged their audience.
We saw a variety of artworks displaying high technical skill and extensive knowledge of their artmaking practice whilst they incorporated elements of art history to support their development. The range of expressive forms and level of execution was unbelievably amazing and was truly an inspiration to say the least.

“It wasn't only very fun and enjoyable but it also really helped with the development of our own HSC major works. I was able to understand the qualities of which the markers are looking for in the HSC in regards to the Band 6 level exhibition and gathered a range of inspiration. I can imagine that it would greatly benefit the year 11s in planning the first phase of their BOW”
Olivia Saad HSC VA Student
“My visit to The Art Gallery NSW, was an extremely beneficial and enjoyable experience as we saw intriguing artworks that expressed various ideas and experiences that the artists wanted to portray in unique ways. The range of expressive forms and materials used, displayed the limitless pathways we can take with our artworks. Seeing real-life examples of Year 12 major works has benefited me in my HSC course as they portray how unusual materials and techniques can help create an effective artwork, which I can try and implement in my own Body of Work”

On the 26th of March during the Senior School assembly, we celebrated the achievements of the Senior Boys Basketball Team and presented each team member their medals of achievement throughout the Senior Boys Basketball team season. The team achieved 2nd place during the PDSSSC Basketball Gala Day as well as coming 1st in the MCS Competition Season. Unfortunately during the Grand Final, the team lost but their hard work and dedication will always be remembered. A special thanks for Charisse De Mesa and Luziel Cordoba for assisting the team with manager duties as well as the support of Miss Pett, Mrs Carlos, Mr Dunaeff and Mr Kennaugh throughout the selection process and support throughout the season.

PEER SUPPORT 2021
In Term 1 our Year 10 Peer Support Leaders and their Assistants ran a Peer Support Program with our Year 7 students. The module they ran this year was “Optimism” which focuses on resilience as well as seeing the positives in every situation. Peer Support was a huge success – and a big thank you and congratulations must go to our Year 10 Peer Support Leaders and their Assistants. They have done a tremendous job helping our new Year 7 students settle in – going out of their way to take them to classrooms, answer all their questions and just giving them a few tips on how to cope with homework and high school in general. Although Peer Support only runs during Term 1, I’m sure the friendships and bonds that were formed during Peer Support will continue throughout the year. As you can see from the photos of the Peer Support Party this week, Peer Support was a positive and uplifting experience. Well done Year 7 and your Peer Support Leaders!

Teamwork Week
In Term 1 Week 8 the College celebrated Teamwork Week as part of our Wellbeing Program. This was an opportunity for students to develop their teamwork skills as they participated in the various teamwork activities that were provided in the College. There were a variety of activities across the College including a Team Jersey Mufti Day (where students and staff wore their favourite sporting team jersey), LG photos, LG trivia and a LG Doubles Table Tennis Competition. Other teamwork activities also happened during Wellbeing lessons. It was wonderful to see the team spirit on display across the week.
Thank you to all the students who got involved and developed their teamwork skills and a big thank you to our SRC & House Captains who organised the activities.
Learning Group Doubles Table Tennis Competition
The Learning Group Doubles Tennis Competition was a great initiative by the SRC during Teamwork Week & ran on both Campuses (although it was a bit rain affected!). On the Junior Campus 20 teams signed up and it was great to see all year groups involved in the competition. The Grand Final was between 7C1 (Aaron Geevarghese & Paul Sewiha) and 8G10 (Jeremy Portelli & Rafael Vidovic) and proved to be a great showcase of doubles skills, played in front of a very supportive and encouraging audience. Congratulations to 8G10 – Jeremy & Rafael – who proved to be too good, winning the inaugural Learning Group Doubles Table Tennis Competition 13-12. Thank you to all 20 teams for being involved in our competition – we are developing a very strong table tennis culture!

UAC Applications Open April 1
On Thursday the 1st of April students will receive their UAC PIN and will be able to begin their UAC application. Students will receive their UAC PIN via email. UAC will be using the email address NESA has on file.
UAC advises students to update their email address with NESA with their personal email address (rather than their school one), so that they can be contacted by UAC in December when their school email address may no longer be active.
Whilst UAC will open on April 1st not all Semester One 2022 courses will be listed on the website. Students will need to revisit their UAC application again in August to ensure they list their Semester One 2022 courses.
If students wish to begin their UAC application during Term 2 they can do so by selecting one or two courses. If the course is not listed on the UAC website students can select any course so that they can complete their application. By doing this and paying the UAC Application Fee students can then register for the School Recommendation Scheme. This is an early entry offer scheme. Students successful in this scheme will receive an offer in November.
Should students or parents have any questions about UAC please feel free to send Ms May an email at tmay@parra.catholic.edu.au
