ST Andrews College Leadership Team 2022
Newsletter 18 2022
Dear Members of the St Andrews College Community,
Having just had St Andrews Day on Wednesday it is timely to reflect on what we have achieved as a community this year both inside and outside of the classrooms as learners on a journey. We have excelled in many domains, we have battled on some, yet we have persevered throughout. I was so proud of our Year 12 students who played such an important role in the St Andrews Parish Fundraising Event last weekend. Both the Music and Entertainment VET students committed themselves to the Parish event on their weekend and received excellent reviews. I believe that perseverance is our greatest asset. As I stated during my St Andrews Day Address “presence is most important - we show up”. Keep the focus in these last few weeks as we should always be looking to grow. Make the little things count.
‘It’s All About Learning’
Advent Reflection:
When I was a child, I cannot honestly say I was even aware of the Advent Season. It probably was incorporated into the Sunday Mass celebration, but I have no real recollection of the advent coloured candles or a Christmas tree and decorations that adorn our Parish churches today. The crib however is still very prominent in my mind and this for me was the addition to the Sunday Mass that told me it was the beginning of something special coming and very soon. There would be new shoes, a new coat and everything that you wore under that coat was new and worn on Christmas Day, for Jesus birthday!
The preparation for Christmas was all in our home. It would begin with the Christmas card string prepared and waiting for the cards we hoped would come. The smell of mince pies that would start filling our home, as we waited hopefully for the visitors that would arrive in the weeks leading to Christmas Day with gifts and stories to tell. The Christmas tree and tinsel were next, erected the week before Christmas and the Crib without baby Jesus would go underneath – the greatest gift we all hope for with expectation. Looking back, all of these rituals were preparing our homes but also preparing our hearts for Christmas.
Advent is the season of hopeful waiting. The word Advent means 'coming' and refers to the coming of Christ, who will bring many gifts – peace, justice, happiness, joy, love and hope. During Advent, we have opportunities to get ready for the birth of Jesus and like all births, there is an element of fear. Just as an expectant mother, whose fear and elation are mixed before the birth of her child, Mary, Mother of Jesus would have felt it before the birth of Jesus.
During Advent Jesus comes to us through the hands of others, the holy ones in our lives. Those who reach into our pain and help us up, who are there for us in the good times and the not so good, in the acts and actions of supporting the poor, the homeless, the domestic violence sufferers, and all those who fall into our beautiful prayer of The Beatitudes.
During this Advent Season, the face of God will come and go and we may miss it in the busyness of the Christmas festivities. The face of God, seen in the child that seeks some more attention, the friend who needs to talk, the neighbour whose husband has died, an invitation to share a casual meal, or the sun setting in your back yard. The face of God comes and goes quickly in our lives. We long to see Christ for longer than a glimpse but if we are not watching and ready, the face will be gone, and we will miss it, over and over again.
This Advent, why not seek out the face of Jesus, in the faces of children, the unemployed, the sick, the poor, the homeless, the refugee, the person a long way from home, the grieving and the lonely, and maybe even in the faces of our nearest and dearest. If we open our eyes to be alert to those around us, we will not miss Jesus this Advent.
Chifley Young Woman of the Year presented to Cheguit Deng:
Congratulations to Chegudit Deng (Class of 2022) who was awarded the Chifley Young Woman of the Year Award for her work with the young Sudanese community at the College and from surrounding Primary Schools. Every Tuesday Chegudit would organise a variety of learning and leisure activities for the students to encourage aspiration and growth. It was an honour to be part of the award ceremony last Friday and witness this accolade for Chegudit.
St Andrews Day:
Thank you to Fr Kevin, Mr Clarke, Mr Hoare, Mr Alata, Mr Chiapetta, Ms Breeze and the musicians, Mr McGloghan and Mr Maura, Ms McKechnie for a beautiful Mass. The presence of our special guests, parents, and the participation of the community was wonderful to see. The Mass was a real highlight, and the way the students engaged in the Mass was excellent. The induction of our 2023 Captains and Student Leaders is always a highlight of the day as well. I had many comments from the Carnival Staff at how polite and respectful our students were.

Student Leadership
It’s been a very busy time for our new 2023 College Student Leadership Team. Last week the Student Leaders had a wonderful Leadership Retreat at Kiah Ridge. Shaniya Lal (who is leading the Publicity Portfolio) as well as the Publicity Portfolio, have written an article about this wonderful experience. We also celebrated our Student Leaders at their Induction at the St Andrews Day Mass. We wish them all the best as they lead our College in 2023. I am sure they will do a brilliant job in their new roles. The full list of the College Student Leadership Team, including their portfolios, is below:

Year 8 Camp
Year 8 attended YMCA Camp Yarramundi on Thursday 10th - Friday 11th November. Students enjoyed this camp as part of the Major Experiences Program.
The aim of the camp was to provide students with many opportunities so they were able to develop a sense of community, a sense of belonging, respect and care for their peers, a sense of achievement, skills and confidence.
Over the 2 days, students were encouraged to participate in a number of activities that challenged them in terms of personal growth and to build upon their teamwork and collaboration skills. Some of the activities students participated in were the giant swing, rock climbing, orienteering, bush craft, flying fox, initiatives and alpine rescue.
Year 8 Camp Reflections
The year 8 camp adventure allowed me to do something new and meet different people. Activities such as the giant swing and rock climbing proved a great opportunity to step outside my comfort zone, considering heights definitely isn’t my thing. Overall it was a great experience and is definitely something I’ll remember for a long while.
Camp was a fun and engaging experience. I enjoyed being able to participate in challenging yet entertaining activities like the alpine rescue, flying fox, giant swing and orienteering. At Camp, I learned how to problem-solve and make decisions effectively through being in a team. Alpine Rescue, required us to get through the obstacle course and return to our checkpoint, it was a struggle however we got close to finishing. Other activities, such as the giant swing and flying fox seemed scary at first but after trying them, I enjoyed them and went countless times. Being at Camp was an overall entertaining experience where I got to have fun and engage in skill-building activities.
The year 8 camp was really fun, l really enjoyed the activities that they provided. On the year 8 camp we got to do activities with our elective classes, which meant we got to meet new people that we never talked to before.
My year 8 camp experience was absolutely wonderful from the moment we left our school all through the next evening.Throughout the whole first and second day we had so many activities to enjoy and bond together as a cohort. I was able to get out of my comfort zone in a variety of activities such as rock climbing and giant swing. Overall I am so grateful that I got to experience an amazing camp with all my friends and peers across year 8.
At camp I enjoyed doing the activities like giant swing, rock climbing, orienteering and bushcraft. I enjoyed spending time with my friends, and also liked the food that the camp provided us with. I thank the school for giving us the opportunity to go away on this camp and have fun.

7VAC and 7VAH - completed artworks
Students in Mrs Harris’ 7VAC and 7VAH completed their oil pastel drawings this week, with a focus on colour and texture in order to explore the beautiful animals and habitats from our Australian rainforests and coast lines. Here are some of the examples of their artworks.
Year 9 Poetic Landscapes
Returning from Term 3 holidays, our students submitted the first artwork from their Collection of Works for their chosen landscape study. Students have selected sites from Harvey Park to Hunter Valley, reminiscing childhood memories as well as exploring local flora and fauna. Students were challenged to select from a variety of artmaking mediums in order to create their first artwork.

Year 7 ‘Mulga’
Year 7 has been recently introduced to an artist named ‘Muga’, Joel Moore. Mulga is best known for his unique Australian creations and signature style of intricate line work and bright colours, Mulga’s creations grace walls and objects across the world. After researching Mulga’s style and choosing our favourite native animals, students were asked to create an artwork inspired by Mulga considering the Elements of Art within their paper/cup/digital designs. Students were able to choose a media form of choice, of which most chose colour pencils, textas and watercolour.

Year 7 ‘Pete Cromer Collage’
Pete Cromer, an artist inspired by optimistic personalities found in the wild. Cromer is best known for his signature bright colours and beautiful textures layered together in collage to create an impression of his chosen wild life animal. As the last artwork of the year, students collate ideas of Elements of Art and ideas revolving around art making methods to assist in their collage technique, to layer different shapes, colours and textures to construct an animal of choice. Students choose animals such as a lion, tiger, cheetah and/or a bird.

Year 8 ‘Mombassa Triptych Artworks’
Year 8 continued exploring Mombassa’s artworks further implementing their understanding of the artist in triptych formation. Students chose their favourite Mombassa artwork and then created two more artworks that connected the left and right hand side of the original Mombassa work, as a result, creating a Triptych artwork. Students wrote a short narrative to inspire their artmaking practice. Students also ensured they used the same vibrant colours, line, texture and tone to create a uniform finalised image when designing their works.
Here are some students work in progress:

Year 10 ‘Self Directed BOW’
The purpose behind the self-directed unit is for students to explore a concept and expressive form of choice with the guidance of a teacher in order for students to transition seamlessly into their senior years with an understanding of media limitations, strengths in particular expressive forms and to sparks ideas - thinking of artistic originality within their art making practice.
After back and forth critical dialogue between artist and teacher/mentor, year 10 have now completed their self-directed Body of Works. Artworks range in expressive forms from drawing, painting, ceramics, digital media to sculpture.
Here are some photographs of student Body of Works

Mrs Shandel Kemal - Visual Arts Teacher

We are grateful for the gifts you have brought to our College community. Miss Rivera finished up officially in Week 5, as we welcomed back Mrs Psaila from maternity leave.
Representative Season 3 concluded
Our final Representative season of the year has officially concluded. Our boys Cricket team was excited to play their final game of the Season but were unfortunately met with a last minute forfeit by Gilroy. Their enthusiasm and commitment has been second to none this season! Thanks to Mr McBride for his work with this team who are already excited for next years competition!
Trials will be held early in Term 1 next year for Season 1 where the competition includes boys and girls Oztag, boys and girls Volleyball and boys Basketball. More information about these will be provided to students at the start of the school year next year.
Bianca Infante and Romeo Atengco- The Australian Youth Volleyball Championships, Victoria
You would recall reading about Bianca Infante of year 11 and Romeo Atengco of year 10 being selected into their respective state teams for Volleyball. Please see the excerpts below from Romeo and Bianca, based on their recent experience:
Romeo:
‘The Australian Youth Volleyball Nationals were held at Bendigo, Victoria. Over the 5 day competition, we played against each state once. On the first day, we won our game with elite players From South Australia 2:1. We followed this with another win later in the day against Tasmania. We became undefeated throughout the other matches with us losing one game before our semi final against the reigning Champions, the Queensland Maroon team. We had gotten to the semi-finals which we lost against South Australia on a tiebreaker with the game lasting a total of 2 hours. We sadly lost the final point and were disappointed as we knew we could've won. We ended up placing 4th overall in the competition. It was a great experience and I still continue to train harder for next year.’
Romeo also recently competed at a 3 day tournament in Canberra at the AIS facilities against over 105 teams in a competition that has run for the last 56 years.
Bianca:
‘From the 25th - 29th September, my team had played a total of 7 round robin games and successfully secured a spot in the playoffs, which would determine who would compete in the semi-finals. We played a very intense and close match, losing 23-25 in the last set to the Queensland Maroon team, who would end up winning the entire competition. We finished the tournament placing 5th overall in the entire nation. All in all, it was an amazing experience, and I am excited for what the 2023 indoor season has in store.’
A very big congratulations from the whole St Andrews community to both Bianca and Romeo.
Watch this space; there are big things to come from these two talented young people!

On Thursday the 24th of November, the newly elected Student Leadership Team of 2023 participated in a two-day retreat at Kiah Ridge in preparation for the year ahead. Collaboratively the team engaged in a number of icebreaker and goal planning activities led by next year’s Year 12 College Leaders. Although some of us were a bit nervous at the start, we slowly began to get to know one another, and everyone was successful in making foundational connections by the end of the two-day retreat.

It was such a huge pleasure getting to meet the new leaders of 2023! We all had a blast playing various icebreakers and each of them created opportunities to interact with the entire leadership team. It was clear at the end of the brief retreat that each Leader ranging from House Captain to SRC each had unique skills and talents to bring to the team.
During the retreat, we were privileged to have our college Principal, Dr Kennaugh, pay a visit and witness our Leaders of Wellbeing engage with each other in an intense ice breaker activity - which was very entertaining to watch! Although the time spent seemed short, we all achieved so much. Once the retreat had come to an end, we were ready to take on the challenge of 2023 and whatever it may bring.
We would like to extend our thanks to Dr Kennaugh, Fr. Kevin, Mr Frankham, Ms Cooper, Mr Leaves and the Kiah Ridge team for such an amazing opportunity.

On the 26th of November Saturday of last week, students from our Year 12 VET Entertainment Year 12 Music classes volunteered their time to take part in the St Andrews Parish Marayong Community Concert that was raising money for the social justice refugee mentoring program. Our students did a fantastic job with the setting up of Audio equipment by our VET Entertainment students as well as all our music students performing songs alongside the St Andrews wider community in order to help raise awareness about some of the social justice issues that migrant families are faced with. The concert raised over $7000 and was a huge success.
Special thanks to Mr Culbert for liaising with the Parish for giving our Year 12 students a chance to be a part of something special as well as Miss Breeze, Miss Tan and Mr Hoare for giving up their time on Saturday to not only support our students but the local community. A big thank you as well to Dr Kennaugh and Mrs Welch for assisting with the logistics of this event as well as our students’ parents who took their time to watch and support our students and local parish with this event.
